...and films about water, my cine-musical collaboration with the local band abunai!, is about ready to be dressed up and taken out on the town! fans of that hot "neo-psychedelic" sound can catch a sneak preview of five of these eight special, special films at terrastock iv in seattle, washington. (boston-area fans, fear not: films about water will also screen in the bay state, both at suffolk university and at the record-release party for abunai's upcoming album, round wound). films about water is a series of short films that will mainly be used for rear projection when abunai! play out. the films portray water in various uses around boston (such as in fountains and reflecting pools), in its "natural" habitat (the gorgeous shore line on george's island, the mystic river, and under the bu bridge), creatures that live in water (like the gorgeous tropical fishies at the new england aquarium), and water-related activities (the waterfire festivals, the parade in honor of saint anthony di padua, and powerful sculler louisa edgerly) and esoterica (bill turville's whimsical fish car and the cavalcade of cod in boston). i came up with the idea for the films when the benevolent and ubiquitous abunai! drummer joe turner voiced an interest in possibly collaborating with me by doing a music video. while we negotiated with the other members of the band on the specifics of this video, i came up with the idea of doing a series of films for them to screen at their live shows. the "water" theme surfaced (heh) after contemplating the cover art and theme of their previous record, the mystic river sound, and hearing about the selection process for the sleeve paintings. faw was primarily shot on super-8, but there are also some segments shot on digital video and the mighty and powerful pxl-2000. i photographed and edited the vast majority of the films, with some substantial help from local film guru steve bennett and joe turner. want more information on faw? drop me a line. |
